Hasbro Children’s Hospital Receives Outdoor Starlight Space
Spending day after day, sometimes for months on end, in a hospital room can be draining. Thankfully, Starlight Spaces gives patients and their families stuck in the hospital a relaxing place to play and socialize, away from all the medical noise.
Starlight recently partnered with CVS Pharmacy, Colgate-Palmolive Company, and TerraCycle to create a unique outside Space at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island!
CVS Pharmacy customers in Rhode Island recycled more toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, and floss containers than any other state in the country, and Hasbro Children’s Hospital was awarded the grand prize – a new playground.
In September 2020, the Balise Healing Garden and a playground were completed!
When patients and families enter the area, they are greeted by a teaching garden. Each bed houses vegetables and herbs according to their colors and characteristics, so kids can learn about healthy foods while they play.
The Healing Arts Theatre features stadium-style benches where an audience can watch patients entertain and express themselves.
The playground includes swings, a play hut, and a climb-on structure with a wheelchair accessible slide, which encourages movement and physical therapy in patients. The equipment is constructed from recycled materials, including oral care products and packaging.

This scavenger hunt encourages play, entertainment, and socialization! Patients can discover a time capsule, musical equipment, and more with their families and friends.
Today, patients can enjoy this Starlight Space while following current health and safety guidelines. The area is cleaned regularly, and informational signs regarding COVID-19 and sanitizer stations are placed throughout it.
“This is a very special project. We know there’s a correlation between spending time outside and the healing journey for children, and that a place for respite brings normalcy to a child’s hospital stay,” said Timothy J. Babineau, MD, President and CEO of Lifespan, which Hasbro Children’s Hospital is part of.
Starlight Spaces transforms indoor and outdoor environments by providing an update, partial renovation, or total overhaul to an existing space. By re-imagining these spaces, pediatric patients and their families can safely escape the hospital setting and relax together.
Since 2003, over 100 Starlight Spaces have transformed the hospital experience for 3.2 million children. Each Space provides patients with comfort, socialization, a sense of normalcy, and so much more
